International Conference

'Long-term Trends in the Welfare of the Population of Russia and CIS Countries'

The 'Retrospective' project on historical statistics, implemented at HSE University, aims to study and transform archival and other statistical data related to the past in order to identify trends, analyse the present, and forecast the future.

The current consensus recognises the high value of historical statistics in analysing long-term trends in economics, sociology, demography, and other fields. However, merely finding and publishing historical data from archives is insufficient. Historical statistics are not readily comparable with modern data for a variety of reasons. Changes in state borders, statistical methodology, product range and consumption patterns, as well as social structure all need to be considered in the analysis. The data from historical statistics must be professionally processed and prepared for integration with modern statistics. To accomplish this, an appropriate methodology must be established and the necessary calculations conducted. These issues will be the discussed at the upcoming conference.

All interested researchers—statisticians, historians, economists, sociologists—are invited to participate in the discussion.
